One hundred years ago on June 2, the U.S. government unilaterally extended U.S. citizenship to Native Americans with the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act. As dual citizens of their Tribal Nations and the United States, members of federally recognized tribes have the right to register and participate in both non-Tribal (federal and state) elections and Tribal elections to decide who should represent them. However, Native people continually have had to litigate for that right. Only in 1958, 38 years after the Indian Citizenship Act, did Native voters participate in elections in all 50 states.
Yet state attempts to disenfranchise Native voters continue to this day, as seen recently in Montana and North Dakota.
But we will not be silenced. Our voices and our votes matter. And they make a difference.
Elections impact funding for schools and higher education programs, transportation, housing, health care policy, and the economies of our Native Nations in hundreds of ways.
We need each and every one of our students, community members, and supporters to register to vote.
Voting is not just our legal right—it is our obligation—to ourselves as Native people, to our families, and to our sovereign Nations. By voting in tribal, local, state, and national elections, we honor our ancestors who worked to make our peoples’ voices heard. By voting, we ensure our voices guide our Native Nations.
