Navajo Technical College to host international consortium’s annual board meeting

July 29, 2013

CROWNPOINT, NM – A year removed from hosting its annual conference in Taiwan, the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) will be convening for their annual board meeting at Navajo Technical College’s Crownpoint campus from August 4-6, 2013.

The theme for this year’s meeting is “Celebrating Global Indigenous Leadership,” and will kick off with a welcoming ceremony on August 4 at NTC’s Hospitality Center. Over thirty individuals have registered for the board meeting with representatives traveling from as far as Australia, Canada, Norway, Taiwan, and New Zealand.

“It’s a real honor to be hosting an event of this caliber,” said NTC President Dr. Elmer J. Guy. “There are going to be educational leaders from across the world attending the meeting so it’ll be nice to showcase our culture and who we are as Diné People.”

“Navajo Tech has been making leaps and bounds in our educational offerings to the point where we are now becoming a university, and I could not think of a more fitting place to host such an event,” continued Dr. Guy.

Dr. Guy had attended WINHEC’s conference in Taiwan last year, along with NTC Dean of Student Services Deloris Becenti and NTC Chair of Dine’ Studies, Education & Leadership Dr. Wesley K. Thomas, and it is with the same prestige that he hopes to host WINHEC’s board meeting.

After the conclusion of the annual board meeting, the WINHEC group will move to Santa Fe, NM August 7-11 for the American Indian Higher Education Consortium’s (AIHEC) 40th Anniversary Conference at the Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort.

WINHEC was officially launched in 2002 for the purpose of providing an international forum and support for Indigenous Peoples to pursue common goals through higher education.
