Happy Birthday Fort Berthold Community College. Thirty nine years ago a door of opportunity
opened and some visionary people chose to act on it. Mr. Leonard Bear King wrote a proposal to the
Department of Education under the Title III division to strengthen developing institutions. At that time,he was working at the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of North Dakota, Director of Indian Programs.
Tribal members, Vance and Austin Gillette were in school at UND at the time. An unofficial committee composed of other action minded tribal members contributed to the founding of the college.
The grant writers and contributors were: Leonard Bear King, Vance Gillette, Austin Gillette, Melvin
Walker and Carl Whitman. The original Board of Directors was: Janice Kerzman, Darlene Finley,
Phyllis Howard, David Little Swallow, Leroy Young Bird, Lester Crows Heart, Ronald Little Owl, Phillip
Ross, Viola Schettler and Susan Malnourie.
Some of these visionaries are no longer with us today. Today is a day to hon
or these people for their vision and contribution to the tribal college movement. I have attached the original resolution and
articles of incorporation.
