October 23, 2012

CROWNPOINT, NM – Navajo Technical College environmental science and natural resources major and Student Senate president Dwight Carlston of Falcons Nest, NM will be featured on the television show, “The Real Winning Edge,” this Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, and will broadcast on KASY Albuquerque beginning at 9:30 am, MST.

The “Real Winning Edge” features real-life high school and college students who face challenges in their youth and overcome those to become successful later in life. Each of the individuals selected represent a sport or a field in the arts, and the series documents how they have conquered the odds to achieve victory in their field of talent, and also how they combat difficult circumstances in their personal lives.

According to the program’s official press release, “it is a program that encourages young people to see beyond their own circumstances and realize they are not alone in their struggles. It is a program that instills confidence in teenagers who are reaching for their own dreams, and delivers a strong message of hope and optimism for the future of America’s youth.”

Carlston’s story will detail his life growing up on the Navajo Nation, and overcoming difficult family circumstances to excel in athletics and academics. Each show begins with a celebrity introduction and Carlston’s episode will feature a preface by champion bull rider, Jerome Davis.

Carlston has excelled both in and out the classroom at Navajo Tech, carrying a 3.88 cumulative GPA while also serving as Student Senate president and participating in National Technical Honor Society. In addition to his success in academics, Carlston also placed 51st at the USCAA Cross Country Nationals in Lake Placid, NY in 2011 and competed on NTC’s rodeo team as a bull rider.
