United Tribes powwow to be telecast

If you can’t make to the powwow, the powwow can come to you. United Tribes Technical College plans to telecast powwow’s biggest night.
One evening of the four-day cultural event will be carried live on Saturday, September 8 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight (Central Time).
The telecast will originate from Lone Star Arena on the college campus and can be seen at the college’s website www.uttc.edu. It will also be carried on Dakota Media Access, Bismarck-Mandan Cable TV Channel 12, from 7—11 p.m.
“We are reaching out in this way to those unable to make it to campus,” said Julie M. Cain, United Tribes International Powwow Committee Chairperson. “This is our biggest event of the year. It celebrates our culture. It kicks-off our school year and we want people far and wide to enjoy it.”

The Saturday evening schedule includes a colorful grand entry of hundreds of dancers, followed by drum and dance competition, intertribal dancing, and a performance by the featured cultural group: Tafiti Samoan Fire Knife dancers. Also scheduled is the introduction of the new Miss Indian Nations.
Students and staff members of the Media Arts division in the college’s Art/Art Marketing Program will produce the telecast with cameras and microphones positioned to capture the action in the powwow arena.
The United Tribes Powwow is one of the premier cultural events in North Dakota, attracting visitors from around the nation and abroad. Represented among the participants are over 70 tribes, featuring upwards of 1,000 dancers and drummers and drawing 15,000 spectators.
The webcast production will be supported by personnel from the college’s Information Technology Department and Office of Public Information, and the powwow sound contractor, Wi Coni Wa Ste Productions, McLaughlin, SD.
This will be the third telecast of the United Tribes International Powwow, now in its 43rd year. The event runs Thursday, September 6 through Sunday, September 9 on the campus of United Tribes Technical College, 3315 University Drive, Bismarck, ND.
