Tribal Colleges - NM Institute of American Indian Arts![]() Established in 1962 as the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) during the administration of President John F. Kennedy, IAIA was originally located on the campus of the Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Under the directorship of its founders, Dr. George Boyce and Lloyd Kiva New, Cherokee, the Institute embodied a bold and innovative approach to arts education. It championed freedom of creative expression for American Indian and Alaska Native students from all corners of North America. Today, IAIA has graduated nearly 4,000 students representing 90% of the 562 federally recognized tribes in the nation. IAIA offers two- and four-year degrees in Creative Writing, Studio Arts, New Media Arts, Museum Studies and Indigenous Liberal Studies, and is singularly qualified to offer students an environment and foundation from which they can create new forms of artistic expression and accomplishment. IAIA continues to be at the forefront of the contemporary Indian art movement. Its students, faculty and alumni continue to gain renown nationally and internationally for their innovative and groundbreaking work. Many of the top American Indian and Alaska Native artists whose work is found in art galleries and museums have pursued their academic and artistic goals at IAIA, and their successes serve as an inspiration for all students. In addition to the academic programs, the Institute also manages the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and the Center for Lifelong Education.
