Continues Support Of American Indian Education The American Indian College Fund was recently awarded a $20,000 grant from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in order to fund the Wal-Mart Tribal College Scholarship Program. The program will provide thirty-two $500 scholarships to a student at each of the nation's tribal colleges and universities. In addition, four of the tribal colleges with the largest enrollments, Diné College, Haskell Indian Nations University, Oglala Lakota College and Sinte Gleska University, will receive additional scholarship support in the amount of $1,000 for one eligible tribal college student. American Indian College Fund President Richard B. Williams stated, "We are very impressed with Wal-Mart 'commitment to education by helping students of all ages and backgrounds achieve their dreams of going to college.' Their philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally parallels the Fund's goals and objectives with respect to the support of tribal colleges, the community and the students. This generous gift will make a tremendous difference in the lives of many students. We are extraordinarily grateful." The Fund has worked closely with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. since 1999 to provide educational opportunity to American Indian students attending the tribal colleges. To date, their support has totaled over $70,000. "We consider Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. a great ally in our efforts to change the face of Indian education, one tribal graduate at a time," Williams continued. |
